
Module 12: Financial Literacy I – Cost of Higher
Education
Suggested Class Format: Icebreaker à Core Lesson à Application Activity à Reflection
Purpose: To increase awareness of college
costs, types of financial aid, and the value of higher education in long-term
financial planning.
Core Lesson Objectives:
- Articulate the cost of higher education and the value of higher
education
- Compare types of financial aid and determine what resources are
appropriate
- Identify resources on campus for financial services
Sample Application
Activity: Value of Higher Ed Reflection and Engagement

Instructions:
o Ask students to write responses
to the following prompts:
§ “What does a college degree mean
to me financially, personally, and professionally? What’s one way I’ve already
benefited from being in college?”
o In pairs, ask students to share one
or two points from their reflection.
§ Encourage partners to ask at
least one follow-up question to each other (“Why is that important to you?” or
“Can you give an example?”).
o Sticky Note Wall
§ Students choose one sentence from
their reflection and write it on a sticky note.
§ Ask students to place their note
under one of three headings posted on the wall or board: Financial, Personal, Professional.
§ Students take a minute to explore
the wall and read a few notes from others.
o Class Brainstorm
§ As the instructor, read a few
sticky notes aloud from each category.
§ Summarize common themes (i.e.,
“Many of you mentioned avoiding student debt under financial, building
confidence under personal, and networking under professional”).
Closing
- Remind students that the FSC
Financial Aid and Student Accounts offices provide services such
as payment plans, scholarship options, etc.

the SUNY cost of attendance compared to other 4-year schools
- Ask students
to consider:

“What’s one financial aid resource (i.e.,
payment plans, scholarships, etc.) I want to learn more about?”
